The Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation may oblige domestic manufacturers of barrier-type contraceptives to reduce their proven medical efficacy to 80% or less. Now it is 95-99%.

At the interdepartmental meeting devoted to demography, figures were announced: almost two-thirds of condoms are supplied to Russia from abroad, and it will be difficult to reduce their effectiveness industrially, but the remaining part of the products can have a significant impact on demography.

"In the Lipetsk region, an experiment has already been conducted - they replaced oral contraceptives with a placebo. And there was a very clear impact on demographics. And at first, we didn't have any results, but three quarters ended and suddenly the numbers started," said Elena Bolshakova, Deputy Minister of Health.

Given the success of this experiment, it is planned to extend it to more popular types of contraception. The only possible ways to reduce their effectiveness are considered to be the "adjustment of industrial technology" and the mitigation of indicators by which products can be classified as defective and not allowed on the market.
